The unpredictability of Spring makes itself known once again. The well-trod cobblestones of Trastevere, home yesterday to locals and tourists alike savoring a sunny stroll, are now united under a sheet of dark rainfall. Save for the gentle pitter-patter of droplets on nearby awnings, Rome is as quiet as a holiday. Everyone, it seems, knows the routine. Stay inside, get…

For many people (including moi), Instagram provides an excellent window into the world beyond our home towns. Following travel-minded accounts and formulating travel plans go hand-in-hand in today’s social media landscape. What better way to plan an itinerary than to catch a glimpse at your destination from a local’s perspective? What better way to find out where to visit (and…
From the middle of March to the end of April, Josh Travels Sometimes to Europe, starting in London and making his way down to the south of France and ultimately to Rome. From Rome, our intrepid traveler will somehow manage the work-life balance of a temporary digital nomad. These are his stories. Phew. Of all the words in the English…
Bagelmania Serves Up the Best Bagels in Las Vegas
Nothing conjures up my childhood like a good old fashioned Jewish deli. The corned beef, the lox, the brightly-colored soda bottles, the grumpy regulars and their strange aftershave, but above all else the bagels. No breakfast seemed complete without a warm bagel fresh from the oven, topped with a schmear of alabaster cream cheese to transform the leavened discus into…
Puerto Rico: A Love Letter in 42 Photographs (Guavate)
Puerto Rico Highway 184 (aka “Guavate” or “The Pork Highway’) is a winding mountainous road lined with lechoneras (roasted pork restaurants) that are famous all over the island. Puerto Ricans come in droves to indulge on lechon (roasted pork), cut fresh off the twirling animal above the coals. Other treats that inexplicably taste better in Guavate than in any other…
I’ve eaten at El Dorado Cantina hundreds of times. No exaggeration, no grandiose foodie hyperbole. My office used to be directly next door to it, which made it an obvious lunch choice over the past three years. Beyond its close proximity, the consistent quality of El Dorado’s menu items (which favor organic, non-GMO, and natural products) keep me coming back…
Puerto Rico: A Love Letter in 42 Photographs (Humacao)
Humacao is a small city on the east coast of the island of Puerto Rico. My mother’s family hails from this largely rural area of the southeast. It is also a poor region of Puerto Rico, with over 43% of the city’s population below the poverty line. The town square, dominated by a church like many of Puerto Rico’s public…
On a chilly January morning, thousands of civic-minded Nevada residents gathered at Sam Boyd stadium for the first anniversary of the national Women’s March. This event also served as the inaugural #PowertothePolls rally, encouraging the multitudes gathered in solidarity to take their activism further — directly to the voting booth and into the halls of elected office. Nevada, a crucial…
El Yunque National Forest is the only tropical rain forest in the United States. Located in the northeast part of Puerto Rico, the rainforest is a popular hiking destination and the center for conservation efforts on the island. Many of the trees and foliage seen here was obliterated by Hurricane Maria. Before you visit, make sure to check the Forest…
“Dogs flew space ships! The Aztecs invented the vacation! Men and Women are the same sex! Our forefathers took drugs! Your brain is not the boss!” Hello, Seekers. This past September, I took my humble Chevy Sonic and a crew of amateur Ufologists (my mom and girlfriend) miles into the open desert in search of Area 51, the mysterious epicenter of…

- 6 days ago by joshtravelssometimes Another lovely day at the #MercatoTestaccio . My main mission was to purchase more vegan cheese from the crazy vegan cheese lady, but she’s closed on Mondays (whoops). So I wandered about taking photos and eating everything in sight. #wheninRome #Testaccio
- 7 days ago by joshtravelssometimes Rome in the Spring? Don’t forget to #lookup . Surprises hang from every balcony. #wheninRome #joshtravelssometimes
- 1 week ago by joshtravelssometimes Stunned at the magnificence of the Baths of Caracalla. Imagine these walls covered in marble, mosaics, and the finest statues of antiquity as 60,000 bathers made their way in and out with ease. It’s no wonder sights like these have inspired artists and writers throughout the ages (Shelley’s Prometheus Unbound was composed among these ruins).
- 1 week ago by joshtravelssometimes That feeling when you’re taking a stroll and suddenly a wild Colosseo appears. #wheninRome
- 2 weeks ago by joshtravelssometimes Looking for a different view of #Rome ? Stick your eye in this hole. Judging from the markings, you won’t be the first. This door is the gateway to the independently-sovereign territory of the Knights of Malta, which is home to the embassy for the Order of Malta. The too-perfect-be-a-coincidence view from the keyhole harmoniously aligns three countries: Italy, Malta, and the Vatican. To see it, make your way to the top of the Aventine Hill (a short walk from the Circus Maximus, Bocca della Verita, or Testaccio). Don’t forget to also check out the Giardino degli Aranci nearby for another
- 2 weeks ago by joshtravelssometimes A storm a-brewing over the Forum. Rainy days in Rome are a good time to think about life, and I do just that on today’s blog post.
- 2 weeks ago by joshtravelssometimes Marinara deliciousness from L'Antica Pizzeria da Michele at the @lacittadellapizza festival in Rome. 120 varieties of pizza from all over Italy, where to start?! When I saw the massive line for this classic Napoletana pizzeria, I knew I had to try it, and by Jove it was the best pizza I’ve ever had! These vendors are from the same pizzeria from Eat Pray Love (which I’ve never seen) but if it’s good enough for Julia Roberts, it’s a sure thing.
